Roots

Roots

Roots. Where are yours?

I’ve never been much of a water rat but growing up in the Netherlands, there’s no going around water. It plays such a huge role in everyday life, no matter where you live in the Netherlands.

My appreciation for this beautiful element changed and grew over the past few years while living in Switzerland. Here I discovered the beauty of the local rivers. I learned to love the water. I’m still not fond of swimming but I learned that it has so much more to offer.

This summer holiday we’re taking our two kids back to where at least some of my roots originate from.

To have my feet in salty sea water again for the first time in at least three years was wonderful. The kids visited the sea for the first time and they just couldn’t get enough.

So, roots. I never really had the feeling I had deep roots here in the Netherlands. But, being back at the sea with my new found appreciation for water, I have to admit I do have some deeper roots here in the land where I was born and spent the first 28 years of my life then I initially thought.

I, for one, needed some actual distance between myself and (some of) my roots to actually find and appreciate them.
